EDINA, in referring to Tight-lacing says—“There is another argument in its favour which none of your correspondents have touched upon. The effect of a lady with a handsome figure on horseback is very striking. The riding-habit fortunately has still the proper length of waist. Here the corset is invaluable the support it gives to the figure when properly fitted and tightly laced. To those young ladies who when at school may have occasionally suffered a slight annoyance when tightly laced in their corsets, when grown up, the beauty of their handsome figures when riding amply compensates. In your June number there is a very sensible remark in the letter from A SCHOOLMISTRESS. She says—‘There can be no doubt that s slender figure is as much admired as ever, and always will be so. The present fashion of short waists is admitted on all hands to be very ugly, and will soon go out. Those girls, then, who have not had their figures properly attended to when growing will be unable to reduce their waists when the fashion changes, whereas by proper care now they will be able to adopt the fashion of longer waists without any inconvenience.’“
